Why Horror Games Feel More Intense at Night Even When Nothing Changes

Technically, the horror games is the same. The enemy placement doesn’t change. The sound design is identical. The hallway you walked through at 2 PM is still the exact same hallway at midnight. And yet horror games almost always feel heavier at night. Not just scarier — denser somehow. More personal. I used to think this was just atmosphere or habit, but the older I get, the more I realize nighttime changes the player more than it changes the game. And horror games are extremely sensitive to the emotional state players bring into them.
