16S rRNA is a key component of the 30S small subunit of prokaryotic ribosomes. Due to the structural importance of 16S rRNA and the relatively slow evolution rate, the comparison of almost complete 16S rRNA gene sequences has been widely used to establish the taxonomic relationship between prokaryotes. The 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequencing developed on the basis of rapidly evolving next-generation sequencing technologies and related bioinformatics methods has become a fast and inexpensive analytical technique for bacterial population description, classification analysis, and species identification.
